Scholarship Update 2008

Education is free in Thailand to all children. However, they must have a school uniform to attend school, provide their own writing materials and books, transportation. They also often have to pay a partial fee towards the school lunch program.

Rural Thai families often have no more than 2,000-3,000 Baht (= less than 60 Euros or 90 US$) a month to live on. This monthly sum has to cover the cost of housing (rent), water, food, electricity, transportation, clothing, and the other little necessities of life. Therefore, money is very limited.

SI Dusit’s Scholarship Program started in 1995 with 10 students from Chiang Rai. Our club members were very concerned about girls in the North being lured into the undesirable industry. Moreover, we promote the objectives of Soroptimism and the Advancement of women following the motto:

“Through Education, Help Others to Help Themselves”

Our scholarship students are girls from poor families who do not have enough money to further their education. We are proud to say that since the conception of this program, we have sponsored 1491 students (as per details shown below). Our help has definitely changed the lives of the young girls and their families.

The future starts

From 1995 until now, hundreds of students graduated proudly from secondary education, vocational level and University, including two medical doctors.

Our scholarships are on a continuous basis for a minimum of six years, so our students can at least finish the secondary level.

Handing over Certificate

This year (as of May 2008), we helped 91 students in 16 provinces. 46% of our students are from the Northeast, 29% from the North, 14% from the South and 12% from the Central region of Thailand. Ten students are from Tsunami affected areas and are sponsored by our club members. We also assisted in a program for student nurses, and one full nursing scholarship degree.

SI Dusit’s scholarship program is mainly financed by our well-established fund raising events such as the biennial Home and Garden Tour.  In addition, we gratefully received donations from our Japanese sister clubs: The Hiro Club, The Kyoto Club, and Takachima Club. We are happy to continuously receive donations from supporting individuals and corporations.

A special momentRoyal Handing Over

In monitoring students, we have retired assistant professors, teachers, nuns, civil servants and the Thai Japanese Association helping us.  We also have direct contact with students so we can proudly see their developments.  The students or our coordinators have to submit the grade report before we transfer the money to them.

Every year, dedicated SI Dusit members also travel to some provinces in order to personally present the scholarship to the happy students.
